Public ownership itself will not automatically solve all of the problems facing our steel works in Scunthorpe and elsewhere. We need to tackle the incredibly high costs of electricity. Steel works here pay 50% more for electricity than in France, for example, and phasing out blast furnaces will only exacerbate this issue. We must stop this irrational and commercially unsustainable zealous pursuit of net zero and green energy policies if we are to give British steel a chance of surviving.
