The Government's Chagos Deal must be subject to a detailed examination of the law.
On the 22nd of May 2025 the Government made clear that they were bound by the International Law for Sea, but in response to a written question, on the 12th of February this year they subsequently said that article 298 of UNCLOS (an opt out) still applies as it did in the United Kingdom's formal declarations dated 7th April 2003 and 31st December 2020.
We need an answer clarifying the Governments position on this matter - this could also effect other British territories like Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands.
